Blog grower Daniël van den Nouweland: "I want to understand plants"
Daniël van den Nouweland is the Commercial Manager of the rose nursery, Marjoland. He runs the company with his brother, Johan, and his father, Joop.
Daniël's greatest aspiration is to produce a reliable product all year round. What makes the horticultural sector so exciting is that it is different each year. Certainly with all the rapid developments such as the digitalisation of the sector. As a boy, Daniël grew up among the cucumbers and drove the tractor around the glasshouse when he turned sixteen. His father started with growing vegetables and at a certain point switched to roses because he wanted to be different. After graduating in Commercial Economics at the Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences, Daniël entered the family company. He became Commercial Manager in 2006.
The company has expanded dramatically in its present location in Waddinxveen. Previously, the family had different companies located in Bleiswijk and Waddinxveen. The company's premises in Waddinxveen is now 20 hectares with an additional 0.8 hectares of sorting and packaging space.
Plants need to feel good
It's important to understand plants. My understanding of roses is only about ten percent - that is so little! It is a huge challenge to understand even more about the growing process. Plants need to feel good. Once we understand this, it pays in terms of quality. This is a huge challenge but we are going for sustainable plants. We want to get as much good out of the plants as we can. This can take years. Our shared vision is to deliver reliable products with consistent quality all year round. Our customers also expect this of us. You don't sell because of a good sales pitch; you sell because of the quality of the product you deliver. Marjoland strives to be better every day.
On the day of the interview, the canteen filled up with Polish employees. Ninety percent of the employees come from Poland and they are mostly well educated. They are thus clever and motivated. I regularly walk around the shop floor to talk to the employees. They come to us through our own employment agency which also arranges housing. They have a lot of responsibility here.
