GMM May 2018: more engagement with Members' Council01 June 2018
The General Members' Meeting (GMM) held on 31 May 2018 concerned the very heart of our cooperative. A majority of 79% of members voted to implement a Members' Council from 1 January 2019. The strategic course for 2018 and the annual accounts for 2017 were also covered. CEO Steven van Schilfgaarde said, “In the past period we laid the basis for building on our success as a marketplace in a more focussed way in the coming years.”
For the first time in the history of Royal FloraHolland, members could vote remotely and in advance. And many took advantage of that opportunity. This was primarily due to the vote on the Members' Council proposal. The number of votes cast represents a voting value of 27%. That is clearly high and demonstrates the support for this decision.
Leo van der Hulst from Summerville Plants attended the GMM and shared his opinion about a Members' Council. "Royal FloraHolland is a flourishing company and must remain so. That is why I feel it is important to be engaged with it. I believe that the Members' Council is a good development. It ensures that members who are adequately informed are making the right choices."
Gijs van Geffen from Bluebird Flowerfarms thinks similarly about it. "As a member of Royal FloraHolland, I consider engagement important. I always come to the GMM. And certainly tonight, when history might be written if members vote for a Members' Council. I voted in favour because I believe that a Members' Council leads to decision-making based on facts. This is necessary to be able to respond to important developments in the future, like new suppliers and sustainability.

Structural influence of members
In the past year and a half, we spoke with members in consultation sessions about the potential of a Members' Council and other strategic themes. We shall continue this dialogue with the Members' Council. Jack Goossens, chair of the Supervisory Board, explained. "The implementation of a Members' Council is a historic moment for the cooperative and its members. With it, we are taking an enormous step towards more structural influence of the members."
Good basis for the future
During the GMM, Steven van Schilfgaarde looked ahead by presenting the more tightly focussed strategy of Royal FloraHolland. He is positive about the future. "There is a financially healthy basis for 2018. In collaboration we find common ground, and as a service provider we are focussing on our core activities: strengthening the physical and digital marketplace. This includes the continued development of logistic and financial services and services for growers."
Bianca van Eijk from Eyco Flowers can agree with this. During the GMM she stood on stage. She shared her experiences and talked with members. This led to an intense discussion. She herself believes that a Members' Council is a positive development for the future. "Royal FloraHolland is crucial for the sales of my product. That is why I find making good choices and engaged members to be important. I believe that we can realise this with a Members' Council. I think that in the future we can take steps faster and easier through the consultation sessions and take the right decisions."
